Community members are calling for speed humps to be installed in a road where a four-year-old girl was hit by a car and left with a brain injury.
Aziza Smit celebrated her fourth birthday at Red Cross Children’s Hospital on Sunday, after she was struck by an alleged speeding driver along Da Gama Street in Belhar.
Cops say the child had been running over the street when she was struck by the vehicle on Thursday.
Police spokesperson, Siyabulela Malo, says a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened.
The child’s uncle, Ricardo Minnaar, says she is in a stable but serious condition: “She was buying chips from the shop around the corner from our home when we just heard a bang. The people said the man was driving fast down the road.
“She has blood on her brain and an injury to her collarbone.
“She has known how to cross the street since she was very small.”

Community activist Kalib Missoe says they approached Ward councillor, Willie Jaftha, for speed humps to be installed.
“Residents are fed-up, we have been appealing for three speed humps because motorists are racing down the road.
“On 4 July residents dug a hole in the street because the Ward councillor, Willie Jaftha, failed us.
“We signed a petition as we were appealing for speed humps.”
Jaftha confirms receiving the petition, saying: “This was sent to the sub-council. The application is now in the hands of the officials
“Request for speed humps can take some time as we need to find a budget if approved.”
