A taxi driver is lucky to be alive after he was hijacked and his car set alight by armed skelms.
Police are searching for three suspects who hijacked the man, believed to be an Uber driver, in Mitchells Plain on Monday evening.
The driver was hijacked just after 8pm in Nugget Street in Lentegeur.
His life was spared and his vehicle, a silver Toyota Corolla, was taken by three armed suspects.
The burnt-out vehicle was later recovered in Steenberg with the suspects nowhere in sight.
Police spokesperson, Siyabulelo Malo, confirms a case is currently under investigation.
“Circumstances surrounding a carjacking incident that occurred in Nugget Street, Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain, on Monday at about 8.20pm is under investigation,” he says.
“According to reports, three unknown men approached the complainant who was driving a silver Toyota Corolla and they forced him out of his vehicle and drove off.
“A case of carjacking has been opened for investigation with no arrests made so far.”
Malo is also urging anyone with information to please come forward.
“Police appeal to the community, anyone with more information that can assist with the investigation is requested to kindly contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” Malo added.
While residents claimed the driver was from Uber, the company on Tuesday could not confirm this.
“We cannot comment because without a name or number plate, we cannot verify whether it is in fact an Uber driver,” the company said.
In April cops nabbed two suspects in Manenberg after they hijacked a meter taxi driver who was dropping off a client in Vanguard Estate.
Two suspects, aged 20 and 23, from Bonteheuwel were arrested.
