The beloved pit bull of a Hanover Park taxi boss, Mujaahid “Bubbles” Diedricks, has survived the shooting in which her owner died.
Savage was struck in the back during the shooting on Saturday night which caused an outcry in Hanover Park after the 26-year-old man died in his driveway.
According to the SPCA, the brave pooch risked her life to protect Bubbles.
“A recent tragedy saw a local Cape Town resident lose his life in a fatal shooting, during which time his faithful dog, Savage, tried to protect him with her own life.
“Sadly the man did not survive the shooting, but his loyal companion now sits in a hospital kennel after being wounded in the crossfire.
“Her bravery reflects a truly strong bond between owner and dog and this is certainly not the first time we have encountered stories of selfless animals trying to protect their guardians by throwing themselves in harm’s way.”
RISK: Savage’s bullet wound
The SPCA says Savage was a rescue pup and when Bubbles found her, her ears were mutilated by a previous cruel encounter.
“From that day when she became Diedricks’ pet, a relationship was filled with love as he kept her safe, fed and cared for up until the day of his death.”
Sister, Shameema, 32, explains Savage was shot by gunmen to keep her quiet.
“She is in for observation and when she is ready she will come home where we will continue to raise her. He loved his dog, she was his baby.
“We are still struggling to deal with the loss of Mujaahid, he was the life and light of our home.
“More than 1000 people attended his janaazah and he was laid to rest at Pook Road Cemetery.”
Mom Ayeshia, 49, believes her son, who was single and did not have any children, was killed by jealous rivals.
GONE: Mujaahid Diedricks
“He was not robbed because he had his cellphone, his bank card and cash on him,” she explained.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut, confirmed the case and says Bubbles was shot by three suspects who fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.
