Cops are hunting for the mastermind behind a dog fighting syndicate in Kensington.
On Thursday, members of the City’s Law Enforcement Animal Unit reacted to a tip-off about dog fighting taking place at Cookie squatter camp in 6th Avenue, Kensington.
Law Enforcement spokesman, Inspector Wayne Dyason, says they believe the suspect used his dog, a pit bull, to attack, maim and kill other animals and to rob people.
The injured animal was found on the property tied to a pole with a rope and also had a chain around its neck.
The dog’s battered face was covered in blood while another injured dog was found in a kennel.
Dyason says the officers rescued the animals and handed them over to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA for treatment.
INHUMANE: The injured Kensington dog
He explains: “The City’s Law Enforcement Animal Unit received a complaint of dog fighting taking place at Cookie squatter camp in 6th Avenue, Kensington.
“Numerous complaints about dog fights taking place in the area had been received, but the officers of Law Enforcement and the SPCA found it difficult to apprehend the suspect who was behind these attacks.
“The suspect reportedly used his pit bull dog to attack, kill and maim other animals and also allegedly rob people.”
He says when the officers arrived on scene they learnt the dog’s owner had fled.
“The dog that was attacked was lying in its kennel severely injured.
“The dogs were both impounded and taken to the SPCA for treatment.
“The suspect is still on the run. SAPS will investigate further as the SPCA will lay criminal charges.”
