Alleged child killer Melvin Volkwyn looked “wild” the day after slain toddler Orderick Lucas’ mother left the child with him.
On Thursday, a third state witness fingered Volkwyn as the last person to care for Orderick before the tot was found dead.
During the murder trial at the Western Cape High Court, state witness Eon Adams, 39, told the court what he knew about the toddler’s disappearance.
To date, the trial has been centred on finding the truth between the testimonies of Volkwyn and mom Davedine Lucas about who last had the child before he died as each have blamed the other.
It was previously explained that four days had passed before Orderick’s parents and grandmother, in whose care he was, realised he was missing, and so when and how Orderick was killed is unknown at this stage.
His body was found dumped in a drain eight days after he was last seen on 24 March 2019.
Yesterday the much anticipated testimony of Adams once again saw Volkwyn identified as the murderer.
According to Davedine, on 24 March, she met with Volkwyn at Adams’ home, where they would usually smoke drugs.
She told the court that shortly after arriving, an angry mob attacked her claiming she had stolen a cellphone and she left Orderick with Adams as she was dragged away and moered in the street.
She said the next day when she returned to Adams’ home to smoke a button, she was told Orderick was taken away by Melvin, who allegedly said he was taking the child to the child’s ouma’s home, but he never arrived.
Adams testified that on the night Orderick was left with him, Melvin came back after going to buy drugs and watched TV with Orderick.
He said Melvin took the child home with him.
According to Adams, Davedine returned the following day, and they smoked a mandrax pill.
“Toe Davedine vir my vra waar is die kind, toe sê ek vir haar Mel het die kind na haar ma toe gevat,” Adams testified.
“I told her I’m going to the clinic and she walked with me and then she went to the police station about her assault.
“I saw Mel at about 10am and he asked me where is Davedine. Hy het wild en bleek gelyk.”
When questioned why Melvin’s appearance on that day was important, Adams explained: “Hy is altyd netjies maar daai dag het hy nie soe gelyk nie.”
Volkwyn sat staring at Adams throughout his testimony.
After a brief cross-examination, Adams was allowed to leave the witness stand.
The trial continues.
