A local graphic designer has found a novel way to fight the Coronavirus by pimping out the current mask trend.
Mitchells Plain resident Devon Atkins started DC Vizual Solutionz this year.
He creates the masks and personalises them, giving customers the option to choose their own designs.
The fashionable mask is reusable as you can simply slip a normal surgical mask into a pocket he creates, which is taken out and replaced as needed.
BRAINCHILD: Devon Atkins
“Personally, I think the normal masks look dull so to kink it up a bit and bring some cheer to the current situation, I thought this would be cool, especially to make the youth feel better.”
To make the mask, Devon first creates a heat resistant foam that goes into two sheets of dust-proof fabric, used for raincoats or umbrellas.
“It’s sewn on three sides to allow you to insert a surgical mask into the side,” he says.
“This mask focuses on health and safety but is also for a funky personalised accessory.
“I want to focus on making it fashionable and it’s easy to clean, you can take the actual surgical mask out and dispose of that.
“The cover was tested and proved to be kwaai, all you do is lay the mask into antiseptic Dettol or Savlon water or you can even throw it into the washing machine and then air dry.
“Another interesting aspect is that you can make your own surgical mask by using a wet wipe inside the sleeve.”
He says he is not making light of a deadly situation: “Yes, this is a serious matter but let’s take the negativity off and look at the positive side of things.”
