A Hanover Park drag queen this week hosted a Christmas lunch for 100 oumas, who are too scared to leave their homes due to gang violence.
Sandra Dee, 60, who claims to be the oldest drag queen on the Cape Flats, runs the all- female Fairy Seniors Club, which hosts weekly activities in the Hanover Park Civic for the golden oldies.
But she says fewer seniors are showing up each week due to the skollies shooting.
“I believe that seniors must be treated with dignity and respect, not live in fear of falling victim to the next crossfire by our gangs,” says Auntie Sandy, as she is known in her community.
She says the ladies have to cross busy roads and face skollies to get to the civic centre, but look forward to their time together.
This week, Sandy and her friends from the gay community dug into their own pockets to treat her “Fairies” to a lekker three-course meal and entertainment.
“I invited seniors from other areas to join us too and it made me feel good serving them.
“Being a senior myself, I believe it’s important to look after their well-being,” she says.
Her guests enjoyed a starter of samoosas, pies, koeksisters, while they feasted on the main meal of roast chicken, sweet rice, roast potatoes and beetroot salad.
They rounded their meal off with a dessert of cheesecake and ice-cream, while being entertained by ballroom couple Zoe Booysen and Shelton Phillips.
Sandra Dee also performed a posh cabaret to a medley of Shirley Bassey songs.

“Everyone knows me for my impersonations of Shirley Bassey, it’s just the perfect reflection of my life,” she jokes.
She said the Fairy Seniors Club is four years old and is struggling without support from local government.
“Seniors here in Hanover Park have been shunned by people who govern.
“I had no assistance from government and so I had to call of my friends from the LGBTI community to help financially.”
