Law Enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyason, says the man was too slow for officers who chased him through Strandfontein Pavilion on Monday.
“The officers were on patrol in the Strandfontein Pavilion area, which has recently seen a spike in stolen vehicles, when members of the public alerted them to a vehicle standing in the parking area that was a suspected stolen vehicle,” he explains.
“The officers approached the driver and asked him to produce his driver’s licence. He panicked and fled but the officers gave chase and caught him.”
Dyason says the owner of the maroon Mazda arrived and identified the vehicle which had been stolen a few days earlier.
“The suspect, who lives in Beacon Valley, was taken to Strandfontein Police station where he was charged.”
In a separate incident on Monday, Law Enforcement officers also arrested a man on Stellenbosch Arterial Road for possession of a homemade gun.
Dyason says during a routine patrol, officers of the Metal Theft Unit came across a woman who was stabbed and robbed of her handbag.
Minutes later a Law Enforcement officer found and arrested one of the two suspects.
“The victim’s handbag with all the items inside were retrieved and while the suspect was searched he was found to be in possession of a knife, used to stab the victim, and a ‘zip-gun’.”
The suspect was arrested and charged for possession of a dangerous weapon and taken to Delft Police Station.
