The 11-year-old was said to be living with his father and was trapped in the shack in Silversands Road when it caught fire.
It is not clear what caused the fire and details regarding the incident are still sketchy. Authorities say two structures burnt during the fire.
Police spokesperson, Sinathi Joni, confirmed the incident and says an inquest docket has been opened for investigation.
“An inquest docket has been opened at Delft SAPS after an 11-year-old boy was found fatally injured inside a burning shack in Delft on Wednesday at 9.20am. Circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” Joni said.
City’s Fire and Rescue spokesperson, Theo Layne, says the cause of the fire is being investigated.
“Fire and Rescue Services responded to a fire at 9.09am whereby two informal structures were destroyed in a fire leaving two people displaced and resulting in one fatality. No other injuries. On the scene 14 firefighters were dispatched with two fire engines, one water tanker and one rescue vehicle. The cause of the fire is undetermined,” Layne said.
Neither the boy’s family nor locals were willing to comment.
