Hundreds of bikers will take part in a mass motorcade in honour of Strandfontein ouma Mymoena Koelman, who died after being tormented by her drug addict grandson for years.
The death of the 76-year-old woman just over a week ago sparked an outcry among crime fighters who claimed social workers and police did nothing to help the elderly lady despite repeated calls for help.
Aunty Mymoena passed away suddenly in her home on 11 February and her janaazah was held later that day.
Tempers flared when a disturbing video surfaced on social media, showing the frail 76-year-old being harassed by grandson Kaashif, 25, who demands R10 to buy ungah (heroin).
The clip shows Kaashif grabbing a frightened Mymoena on her arms and chest as she sits in an armchair and keeps telling him “no”.
Community Police Forum chairperson Sandy Schuter says various biker clubs will host a motorcade starting 10am on Saturday to raise awareness about abuse of the elderly.
She says just last week, another 84-year-old granny living in the same street as Aunty Mymoena called police for help after she was abused by her 17-year-old grandson who is known for smoking drugs.
“Also in this incident, the police did not help or arrest the boy who is extremely abusive towards his granny,” says Schuter.
“The biker clubs are hosting this event to raise awareness about the Older Person’s Act and we are calling on the police, the Department of social development and the Department of Justice to start taking action and enforcing their own laws.”
INVITATION: CPF’s Sandy Schuter
Schuter says the invitation is open to all and they are calling on participants to bring along donations for pensioners.
“You know, this is also about showing the elderly people who are abused that there are people who care and will fight for them, so we are asking people to bring along donations of just coffee, tea and sugar.
“This is about giving them a voice and to not let the memory of Aunty Mymoena die,” Schuter explains.
The motorcade will start at Mitchells Plain Police Station and move towards Strandfontein Police Station and will end in front of Aunty Mymoena’s home in Dingjie Crescent.
