Police have confirmed that a second suspect has been arrested for the kidnapping of a two-month-old Khayelitsha baby.
The suspect is 22-year-old Elly Kubunda, believed to be the boyfriend of the schoolgirl posed as a social worker when she took the boy from his mother.
Kubunda, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, was arrested at his Parow home last Thursday.
Baby Kwahlelwa Tiwane, who is a twin, is still missing.
Claremont High matric pupil Karabo Tau, 18, allegedly confessed that the baby was sold to “foreigners” after she was forced to steal him.
Yesterday, police spokesperson FC van Wyk confirmed Kubunda’s arrest on a charge of abduction.
He appeared in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
“The case was postponed to Monday, February 3, for bail profile. The investigation continues,” said Van Wyk.
Meanwhile,Tau yesterday made a brief appearance at the same court for a bail application but the matter was also postponed to next Tuesday for three witnesses to take the stand.
The courtroom was packed and she got vuil kyke from the baby’s family and community members, who demanded she reveal the baby’s whereabouts or the names of her co-conspirators.
Tau faces charges of kidnapping after she allegedly snatched Kwahlelwa in Parow on 16 January.
The girl approached the family under false pretences, saying she was a social worker and offered to help the family with meal and R1 000 cash vouchers.
The baby’s mother Asanda said Tau identified herself as “Monica” from Site B and asked for her son’s birth certificate and clinic card and made copies.
HURT: Asanda Tiwane
She then took Asanda and the twins to her “office” in Parow, and offered to carry one of the twins.
As they got out of the taxi, she allegedly told the mother she had to run an errand at the Post Office but never returned.
The baby’s distraught father, Siyanda Thongani, said yesterday they just wanted their son back - dead or alive, reports the Cape Argus.
“It has been more than 10 days since our baby was stolen and we do not know whether he is still alive or not,” he said.
“We plea with whoever has information on our baby to come forward. We don’t know whether he eats, wherever he is.
“At this stage we would accept even if the child is dead, but only if he can be found.”
