Cape Flats fishermen are reeling in shock after an angler was stabbed while fishing at Monwabisi Beach.
Sergeant Jacques Joubert, stationed at Harare Police Station, was attacked on Thursday evening by two men who robbed him, and then stabbed him in the neck and lungs.
The 38-year-old officer, fondly known as the “Monwabisi Cop” due to his voluntary patrolling of the beach, was off duty at the time.
He is recovering at Kuils River Mediclinic.
He was not available for interviews, but on Saturday posted a message on Facebook, thanking the man who assisted him.
“Firstly I would like to thank Elwizo Rafferty for taking the attention away from me after I was stabbed. If not for his bravery it would have been much worse. A hero in my eyes.”
It’s believed Elwizo pulled out his gun and scared the skelms away.
The Daily Voice chatted to Elwizo’s friend, Graham Lakay, 46, at the beach yesterday.
“We all know Jacques because he makes sure the beach is safe,” he explains.
“My friend Elwizo said he came across Jacques and he took out his gun, he later told me Jacques had been stabbed.”
Eben Kibido, 39, a member of the Cape Town Rock and Surfing Group on Facebook, says they’re appealing to authorities to step in.
“We pay a permit and we are asking that Law Enforcement also do more patrols.”
Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana says no arrests have been made.
