The Adams family is iconic in the local entertainment industry, and this weekend, they will be hosting their first live stream show together.
Loukmaan and Emo Adams will be joined by their father, Omar “Boeta Maan” Adams, in a show called Father Love, taking place this coming Sunday, on Father’s Day.
I have known Boeta Maan, the founder of the iconic Kinnes Vannie Ses theatre company, since the age of 10 when I first started in the entertainment industry.
He gave me my first birthday party at the age of 13 and he remains one of the father figures in my life.
This is why I have huge respect for his two sons, Loukmaan and Emo, for celebrating their dad in this way.
I am sure you are all familiar with their show called Brother Love, of which there are two editions to date.
The shows sold out at the Baxter Theatre every single time they played there.
The last time, they also created history because the attendance was so huge that they had to put in extra chairs, which is something that does not happen much in mainstream theatres.
So Loukmaan and Emo could easily have done Brother Love 3, but they decided instead to celebrate their dad and his contribution to their careers, which deserves acknowledgement and respect, so, kwaai ouens.
Talking about the inspiration behind the show, Loukmaan says: “The show is not only a celebration of my dad but it’s also an opportunity for us, as his kids, to pay tribute to him while he is still with us, and he can be there to hear it, and we can actually apologise for anything that we might have done wrong to him.”
When asked how it is to work with his dad after so many years, Loukie responded: “My dad was Kinnes Vannie Ses, so he basically created the style of maak jou eie lyne op.
“We would give him his lines and when the rehearsal starts he says a completely different line every time.
“Like, we would decide on a song, OK I’m taking the first verse, Emo the second and Daddy vattie laaste verse in the end, en dan sing hy al drie verses, and myself and Emo are in the backing vocals.”
Emo says: “Besides the fact that I am working with my dad for the first time in 30 years, I think that he is just an amazing person and an amazing talent.
“I almost think that he is a philanthropist that has just never been acknowledged for all the good work that he has done in the community, and so from myself and Loukmaan’s side, it’s just important for us to acknowledge my dad while he’s still with us, because he is 75 years old this year and it’s Fathers Day, so it seemed like it’s the right time to do it.”
He continues: “We find ourselves in Covid-19 times and I just wanted to know I documented a historical moment that honours my dad.
“It is just amazing working with him, amazing to see his energy and the way he lights up when he performs. But I can see that he appreciates that myself and Loukmaan took the time and effort to give him that acknowledgement while he is still with us.”
HONOUR: Adams manne present Father Love
When I spoke to the star of the show, he said in that most delightful way as only Boeta Maan can: “To me as a father, I feel very proud and excited. It’s something great to look forward to in this pandemic.
“The only difference for me was that it wasn’t that easy because all these years I helped and taught kids including Loukmaan and Emo to act, sing, dance and perform, but to do it myself live online... the rehearsal was a pain in the yoh!
“I can’t believe I pulled it off myself but I am telling you, it’s the bomb, gevaarlik, great, stunning!”
The Adams family will go down in Cape Town’s entertainment history as one its most talented families.
We appreciate the laughter, the music, but even more, we appreciate the fact that they have taken us along on the journey. Thank you!
