The Cape Flats’ only hope in Idols this year has been booted off the show.
Hanover Park’s golden voice, Daylin Sass, 23, said his goodbyes on the show on Sunday night after receiving the least votes.
That left the remaining finalists, S’22Kile, Kevin, Karabo and the last Cape hopeful, Berry, to battle it out for the top 3 spots.
Daylin tells the Daily Voice that although he is heartbroken to hang up his mic, he is upbeat about his future.
“I’m excited to see the next part of my journey.
“I actually felt that it was the end for me as I had voice problems for the past two weeks,” he explains.
“I had an intimate prayer with God on Saturday and asked him to guide me and on Sunday when I was eliminated, I knew this was God revealing it to me.
“I’m satisfied, I’m heading towards something bigger.”
Sunday night’s live show challenged contestants with the Judges’ Picks, which saw the contestants having to dig deeper than before.
S’22Kile was first up, belting out Unathi’s pick, Rihanna’s Diamonds.
Her second performance had all the judges in agreement that she had found her genre after singing Sonini by Sun-El Musician.
Kevin performed DJ Maphorisa’s Banyana.
His second outing, Mi Casa’s These Streets, had guest judge Kelly Khumalo saying that Kevin was ready for the world.
Karabo’s take on Jennifer Hudson’s And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going got her a standing ovation from Unathi while her second performance – Brenda Fassie’s Black President – sealed it for her.
Berry, 31, from Bothasig sang No Tears Left to Cry by Ariana Grande and Hold Your Kite by GoldFish and Sorana, which drew lukewarm responses, with Kelly advising the mom of four to consider a vocal coach because while she had the talent, she just needed to smooth the rough edges.
Berry says the feedback has put her in a fighting spirit: “I feel ready to tackle a new week.
“I have songs much more suited to my voice and if I’m given the opportunity to perform them, I think it’s going to be my best yet!”
She adds: “I'm heartbroken to see Daylin leaving the competition but I know he's made his mark and is destined for great things.”
