Comedian Kurt Schoonraad is rolling with the times and is back on stage – and online – with pop-up shows.
His spanking new Cape Town Comedy Club Pop Up show is already in its second week of operation, and Kurt is showcasing a line-up of top-notch comics at the King’s Craft Eatery, in Willowbridge every Thursday night.
Over the next three weeks, the show will feature lagbol Kurt on 20 May, Nik Rabinowitz on 27 May and Shimmy Isaacs on 3 June.
Kurt says: “Cape Town Comedy Club used to be a pop-up venue business called Jou Ma Se Comedy Club, so we are basically going back to our roots with this one.
“We are taking comedy to different places in South Africa, starting with Cape Town.”
The actor and comedian says growing up in Mitchells Plain definitely influenced his sense of humour, which is witty, down to earth and full of home truths to which mense can relate.
Kurt’s career took off almost two decades ago and he has since gone on to produce and perform several hugely successful one-man shows all over the country.
He first gained attention as the quirky accidental tourist on the hit TV series Going Nowhere Slowly.
He’s also hosted various game shows on TV, appearing in the well-known BBC format Who Do You Think You Are? and Comedy Central presents Kurt Schoonraad.
He has also starred in various big-screen productions, the latest as a lead in the international award-winning South African movie Skeem and Tali’s Baby Diary.
“I shot a couple of TV shows, a movie, and also an episode of Family Feud with Steve Harvey,” the modest comedian says.
Kurt says he is happy to be playing to a live audience again: “(Stand-up) comedy is my first love; I started out with live shows on stage.
It's nice to be back on stage with an audience again; since the longest time I felt like I was doing it on a TV screen.”
The 60-minute shows start at 8.30pm and tickets cost R140 via Quicket.
