Entries are now open for the first Mr Gay Western Cape pageant coming up in 2020.
In 2009, Mark Donough approached Barry Reid to help bring back the Miss Gay Western Cape pageant that was stopped in 2002 when the previous pageant owners emigrated.
Eleven years later, the two have established themselves as well-known pageant organisers, with drag pageants thriving under their guidance.
As part of winning Miss Gay Western Cape, the queens are encouraged to start their own events or community upliftment projects. This resulted in some of the country’s most sought after events in the LGBTI community’s social calender.
Barry says: “Queens are now household names in South Africa.”
The duo have decided to launch the first Mr Gay Western Cape competition.
“We feel the timing is right to take on another challenge, so we decided to organise the Mr Gay Western Cape pageant.
“This will be an opportunity to create even more role models in the community,” says Barry.
Contestants will be judged in Theme wear, Swimwear and Evening wear. The pageant is planned for 11 April at the Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone.
Gay men, 19 years and older, may enter until 31 January 2020.
