Grassy Park cops were left with head injuries and bite marks after coming under attack while trying to arrest an alleged drug mert on Friday.
Grassy Park Police Station commander Colonel Dawood Laing says riotous residents pelted cops with stones after the drug mert called for help.
“Officers went to a property in Crane Road in New Horizons following complaints about drug dealing.
“They entered the home of Dino Poggenpoel, 35, who was allegedly selling drugs, but he started performing.
“He assaulted police officers and even bit one officer as he tried to avoid being searched.”
Laing says officers called for back-up after the mother of the suspect called residents to help her.
“A large group of residents surrounded the officers and it took FOUR of them to carry him out of the house.
“They did not manage to get to the drugs because as they tried to load him in the van he started kicking and screaming and residents started throwing stones at the police.”
Poggenpoel was arrested and charged for the attack on police, resisting arrest and assault and appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
“We are waiting for the docket to come back to the station, but we condemn this action by residents who complain about drug merchants and then attack police officers executing their duties. One officer was hit in the head with a brick and another was bitten by the suspect.”
