An alleged gang hitman from Bonteheuwel was killed during a shooting on Monday morning.
Residents say the alleged skollie, 21, was shot in the head near Bramble Way Primary.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, says the shooting occurred on the corner of Bracken Street and Bramble Way at 7:25am.
“The victim was shot in the left side of his head. A murder case has been opened for further investigation. Circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation,” he said.
Residents say the man is a well-known hitman for the Americans gang.
Ward councillor, Angus McKenzie, says on Sunday evening residents reported shootings in the area.
“Shootings in that area started on Sunday and [Monday] morning that man was shot and killed. I am disgusted to see that people will shoot near a primary school and place children in harm’s way.”
He says the recent flare-up in gang shootings is all drug-related as rival gangs fight over turf.
“All of this is about drugs and everyone wanting to sell drugs, but they are being reported by their community so they are frustrated.
“I am appealing to Police Minister Bheki Cele to really assist the community of Bonteheuwel. We require a proactive policing approach rather than a reactive approach.
“It is critical that specialised gang units need to return to ensure that necessary intelligence is gathered to curb and bring to an end the hell some residents are living in,” he says.
McKenzie says he doesn’t want Cele to visit Bonteheuwel or do a walkabout. Instead, they want police to be armed with the resources they need.
