Three school boys in Salt River were robbed of their cellphones after they were lured into a taxi on Monday afternoon.
The learners, from Wesley Primary in Durham Avenue and another high school boy, had been inside the school and were called by a man who convinced them to get into a taxi.
The taxi belongs to a trusted school transport driver.
According to a message the principal sent to parents, the unknown man had lied to the children.
“The two Wesley learners (and) one high school learner got into the vehicle because they know the gentleman as a transport driver. However, there was another man who spun a story to the boys that the principal of Wesley (myself) asked them to collect a few items for me at an unknown location. This guy lured them from the premises and into the vehicle.
“He then robbed the boys. We are not sure if he told the same story about picking up stuff for me to the driver because the learners reported that the driver looked as shocked as them.
“The man got out of the vehicle somewhere in Main Road towards town and got into a taxi going in the opposite direction.
“The driver returned the learners to school and picked up his usual learners and drove off.
“The initial suspicion is that the driver was not involved, but the police are investigating the matter. The kids are safe,” the palie’s message read.
Western Cape Education Department spokesperson, Millicent Merton, confirms the incident.
“Counselling will be provided to the learners. The school will also call a parent meeting,” Merton explains.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, says police are investigating a case of robbery.
“The unknown suspect is yet to be arrested,” Rwexana says.
