Police are hunting for 12 awaiting trial prisoners who escaped at the weekend when they overpowered a guard at a local cop shop.
Soon after the jailbreak on Saturday at Delft Police Station, wakker cops managed to re- arrest two of the suspects.
Police say the suspects face charges of hijacking, drug possession and house breaking.
The only guard on duty at the cells, identified as Warrant Officer Ndogeni, was assaulted and rushed to Gatesville Medical Centre in Athlone.
Police sources say the breakout occurred during breakfast time, at 8am, when food was taken into the cells, and the suspects overpowered the lone guard.
He says the station has three holding cells which accommodates 30 prisoners each.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk, says a task team has been appointed to track the suspects.
“After assaulting the member, 14 awaiting trial prisoners escaped by opening the cell doors with the key. Two of the 14 suspects were re-arrested soon after the escape,” he says.
“The community is requested not to try and apprehend the suspects as they are deemed dangerous, but to inform the Delft Police on 021 954 9000.”
