Timo Werner finally broke his 15-game goal drought to fire Chelsea into the Premier League top four.
After 100 days, 1000 minutes and 57 attempts at goal, the German striker came good on Monday night in the Blues’ 2-0 win over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.
The £48m addition at the start of the season set up Olivier Giroud for a 31st-minute opener before turning in a flicked-on set-piece at the far post to end a tough time for the highly-rated forward.
A relieved Werner said afterwards: “I think as a striker, you always want to score.
“The last month I was not happy about not scoring, but it’s a team sport and when we win, everything is good.
“When I help my team with assists, winning penalties and now with scoring, I’m happy.
“For a striker, it’s much worse when you don’t come into the situation and you don’t have chances.
“I had a lot of chances and I missed them.
“Today, my team brought me a lot of situations where I could score and that's the important thing for me.”
Werner is now looking up the table, with the Blues six points off second-place Manchester United and nine points off league leaders Manchester City
He adds: “At the start of the season, everybody said we are favourites of the title, but in the last two months, it’s shown that we are not.
“We have a lot of work to do that we close the gap to [Manchester] City and other clubs.”
Meanwhile, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel is paaping on the fitness of striker Tammy Abraham, who went off injured in the first half.
