South Africa’s Wimbledon heroes Kevin Anderson and Raven Klaasen are still alive in this year’s US Open.
Anderson, who lost in the final at Wimbledon to Novak Djokovic, advanced to the Round of 32, beating Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 and 6-4.
After playing a five-setter in the first round against American Ryan Harrison, Anderson was relieved to get the better of his “friend” Chardy.
He tweeted after the match: “Very hot day at the #usopen!
“It’s never easy playing my friend Jeremy, but I’m happy to be through to the 3rd round.
“Time for some rest and to get ready for Friday!”
Anderson will cross swords with 19-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov as the heat is turned up.
Klaasen and his doubles partner Michael Venus, who were beaten by Mike Bryan and Jack Sock in the final at Wimbledon, beat Lukas Lacko and John Millman 6-2 and 6-2 in their first round.
