US golfer Tiger Woods came out in support Friday
of sportswear brand Nike's controversial ad campaign featuring former
NFL football player Colin Kaepernick.
"It's a beautiful spot," Woods said of Nike's latest "Just Do It" ad
featuring Kaepernick, among other superstar athletes.
"Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything," a a
caption over the quarterback's face reads in the ad.
"I think Nike is trying to get out ahead of it and trying to do
something special and I think they've done that," Woods said at the
BMW Championship Friday, according to CBS News. "It's a beautiful
spot and pretty powerful people (are) in the spot."
The 30-year-old has been without a job on a National Football League
(NFL) team for a year, which he says is due to his political stance.
He is currently suing the league.
Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem at sports games to
protest racial injustice in the US, including the killing of black
people by police.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly condemned those who kneel
during the anthem and recent polling has found citizens fairly
divided over the issue, though among younger people there is majority
support for players who choose to take a knee.
The NFL season opened on Thursday after weeks of friendlypre-season
games. The two-minute Nike ad made its debut during the NFL opener.
Nike's move to feature Kaepernick has led to a partial backlash, with
some fans very publicly burning or otherwise destroying their Nike
shoes or other athletic gear with the distinctive Nike logo in
protest.
