Their batsmen were asked to put on a show first, with captain Temba Bavuma deciding to set a score for Afghanistan.
Back from a hand injury, Bavuma needed some time in the middle and got it with a well-worked 31 off 39 balls.
Aiden Markram, in at No.3, continued his good run of form, top-scoring with 48 off just 35 balls, with Rassie van der Dussen (21 off 17) and David Miller (20* off 10) chipping in with some runs at the end as SA posted 145/5.
Afghanistan never got going in their reply, with Bavuma taking a good catch off Bjorn Fortuin with the second ball of the innings.
Worryingly, the skipper seemed to have hurt his hand in the process, looking at it continuously after the catch.
South Africa, though, remained disciplined with ball in hand and restricted Afghanistan to just 104/8 in their 20 overs, with Tabraiz Shamsi ending with the best bowling figures of 3/18.
