Chelsea manager Frank Lampard says Harry Maguire should not have been on the pitch when he scored his side’s second goal in a 2-0 Premier League win on Monday night.
According to Lamps, whose side went down to headers from Anthony Martial in the 45th minute and Maquire in the 66th minute, the Manchester United defender should have been sent off for kicking Michy Batshuayi.
BIG MOMENT: Maguire kicking Michy Batshuayi
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system was in the spotlight once again after Maguire kicked Batshuayi in the groin area in the 21st minute at Stamford Bridge.
And Lampard says: “Maguire should have been sent off.
“That’s clear, and that obviously changes the game.
“Decisions like that are crucial.
“That’s a major part of what VAR was brought in for: a second viewing, different angles.
“I don’t get why they aren’t looking at the monitor. It should be used.”
VAR also ruled out two Chelsea goals from Kurt Zouma and Olivier Giroud in a frustrating night for Lampard’s side, who went a fourth straight league match without victory.
RULED OUT: Kurt Zouma goal
Zouma’s 56th minute strike from a corner kick was chalked off after Cesar Azpilicueta was ruled to have pushed United’s Brandon Williams.
Lampard says of the ruling: “The Zouma goal should have stood.”
He went one step further calling the Giroud offside call “soul destroying” after his boot was offside before he headed the ball into the back of the net in the 77th minute.
