Whether Bafana Bafana are still at Afcon or not, Hlompho Kekana doesn’t think they did enough to get out of the group phase.
South Africa would have qualified for the last-16 on Monday night already, had they drawn their final Group D game with Morocco.
But an 89th-minute strike by Atlas Lions skipper Mbark Boussoufa and a 1-0 defeat means they had to wait for last night’s results from Group E and F.
However, Bafana midfielder Kekana reckons they didn’t attack with enough purpose to deserve advancing to the knockout stages in Egypt.
Having failed to hit the target against Morocco, as they did in their opening defeat to Ivory Coast, SA only scored one goal in the tournament - in their 1-0 win over Namibia.
And Kekana says: “Well, we wanted to score [that was instructed], as we saw it was open for everyone and we stood a chance of scoring because at times we looked threatening when we ventured near their box.
“It was sad that we didn’t get that clear chance.
“It was just unfortunate the we conceded that late free kick, I think it was soft, more than anything it was just unfortunate that we can conceded the goal.”
Coach Stuart Baxter adds: “If we had attacked Morocco I think they would have enjoyed the game a lot more.”
