Bafana Bafana snatched defeat from the jaws of victory as they were sent crashing out of the Cosafa Cup on Sunday afternoon.
South Africa were seconds from a semifinal meeting with Lesotho, but were sent packing in a penalty shootout defeat after throwing away a two-goal lead.
Goals from Luther Singh and Grant Margeman had given them a 2-0 advantage at half time.
SA dominated the first half in KwaMashu, Durban, using their 52 percent possession to create seven attempts on target.
Two of those hit the back of the net, with Singh opening the scoring in the 13th minute after a brilliant disguised pass from Teboho Mokoena played him into a one-on-one position.
Ajax Cape Town playmaker Margeman made it 2-0 in the 28th minute, when he rifled in from the edge of the area after SA had carved Botswana open.
The Zebras hit back through Lebogang Ditsele with 38 minutes to go.
And they snatched an equaliser deep in injury time through Thatayaone Ditlhokwe.
Mokoena then saw his spotkick saved in the shootout as SA lost 5-4.
