South Africa's Olympic and World gold medallist Caster Semenya cannot compete in 800m events after the Swiss Supreme Court earlier this week decided that the IAAF’s (International Association of Athletics Federations) regulations on high testosterone levels in female athletes will come into effect.
As a result, Semenya will not be defending her title at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, starting in September.
This latest decision by the Swiss Supreme Court reversed the ruling that allowed Semenya to compete internationally in the 800m while her appeal against the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) was pending.
Under this new ruling, Semenya would have to undergo hormone intervention to continue competing.
The new ruling says that in order for Semenya to continue competing in distances that are 1 500 metres and shorter, she must comply with the regulations enforced by the IAAF in regard to testosterone levels, which were approved by CAS in a landmark case on May 1.
