Mesut Oezil has what it takes to become the new
Arsenal captain, coach Unai Emery said.
Oezil was handed the armband for Saturday's pre-season game against
Paris Saint-Germain in Singapore and scored the opener in a 5-1 win.
It was his first game since the World Cup and capped a tumultuous
week in which he retired from the German national team citing
discrimination and racism after the midfielder was criticised for a
photo taken with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
"Feeling proud to be captain today," Oezil wrote on Twitter after the
match. "Good win and another fantastic support here in Singapore."
Emery is looking to replace the retired Per Mertesacker as the club's
regular captain.
"We are together and giving the responsibility to the players," Emery
said. "I think he [Oezil] can take the responsibility, but let's not
forget [Laurent] Koscielny who is recovering with us.
"Then we've got Petr Cech, who captained us in a friendly match.
"Aaron Ramsey also captained us in a friendly and I am maybe thinking
another one or two players can take responsibility for every player
in the team."
Arsenal have two more pre-season games before their season opener
against champions Manchester City on August 12.
