World Rugby has introduced an orange card as they released optional return-to-play law trials yesterday.
In a big boost for the oval ball’s plannetjies to return during the coronavirus pandemic, rugby’s governing body also released a plan to limit scrums, do away with unnecessary scrum resets and a klompie ander gedagtes to limit the spread of the virus.
Here we take a closer look at the 10 changes to the law.
PS: these are all optional.
SCRUMS
FREE kicks will replace scrum resets “when no infringements occurs (example a collapse)”.
Furthermore, “a hooker must use a brake foot to aid stability”. If not, a free kick will be given.
Added to these, they also
propose that the scrum option for a penalty or free kick be taken away to limit scrums.
In a final move, goal-line drop-out is proposed when an attacker is held up in-goal.
TACKLE
AN ORANGE card will be given to a player for a potential red-card offence.
He will then be removed from the field of play and, depending on the TMO, will be allowed back on after 15 minutes if it’s a yellow-card offence and not again if it’s a red-card offence.
Added to this, the choke tackle (where the ball carrier can’t release the ball) is now a tackle, meaning the attacker must release.
RUCK
RUCKS have been reduced from five to three seconds before a free kick will be given and a free kick will be given to the defensive team if the offensive team can’t “use it”.
MAUL
ONCE a maul is in motion, no player is allowed to join - penalty is a free kick.
Furthermore, only one forward movement will be allowed
per maul.
