Moroccan prosecutors on Saturday ordered
that the passport of Amine Harit, the country's football
international who also plays for the German club Schalke, be
withdrawn in connection with a deadly road accident.
The prosecutors in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh also ordered the
21-year-old professional's release pending further questioning
regarding the accident, a police officer told DPA on condition of
anonymity.
Harit was arrested after his car fatally ran over a man who was
crossing a street in Marrakesh on Friday night.
Initial reports had said that Harit's 14-year-old brother was the one
who was at the wheel at time of the accident. However, the same
police officer disputed these reports, saying that the teenage brother was not inside the car at the time of the accident.
Morocco's independent news portal Hespress, citing an unnamed local
security official, reported that Harit was the one who was driving
the car.
Harit was on holiday in Marrakesh after returning from Russia where
he played with the Moroccan national squad at the World Cup.
Morocco crashed out of the competition after they were beaten by Iran
and Portugal, and drew with Spain in Group B
