And not even Quentin Tarantino or any of the Hollywood hotshots could have scripted it better, with ex-City striker Judas Moseamedi coming back to haunt his previous employers with a second half brace to add to Alan Robertson’s first half goal.
After the Citizens missed an early opportunity through Abdul Jeleel Ajagu, Stellenbosch’s Argentine forward Junior Mendietta flung in a deep cross from a corner, which Mogamad De Goede headered down into the path of Alan Robertson to fire past Hugo Marques and put Stellies 1-0 ahead in the 31st minute.
City coach Eric Tinkler brought on Craig Martin at half time for Fagrie Lakay in the hope that Martin’s express pace would bother Stellenbosch’s defence.
However, Moseamedi’s introduction in the final quarter proved to be a masterstroke from Stellies boss Steve Barker, as the former City ace showed his experience and composure when he firstly beat Marques to a 50-50 ball for his first goal before closing out the match with neatly taken left-footed strike on full time.
Barker says of the win: “From the first whistle I thought, tactically, we got it right…
“Our desire was spot on and I’m really proud of the players, they stuck to our game plan really well.”
