Rising star Duanne Olivier, veterans Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander and world No.1 Kagiso Rabada all played starring roles in the contest as South Africa closed out the third Test at the Wanderers.
With the tourists resuming on 153/3, they were bowled out for 273 in the morning session.
And Elgar says: "We quite fortunate.
"They are very experienced, all except Duanne, but three others know what they want to do and it makes life easier as a captain.
"It’s good way to start the year. We have quite a bit of cricket this summer - five Tests - and we’ve set our goals for that.
"We’ve spoken about those goals and we are halfway there. We have one more series against Sri Lanka and we want to achieve the same feat."
Deputising for suspended Faf du Plessis, Elgar, who previously captained the Proteas at Test match level against England at Lord’s in 2017, says he is proud to get a win as skipper.
The Proteas opening batsman says: “50 percent record. I’ll retire with that now and it’ll be a good record to have.
