Wiaan Mulder has been included in the Proteas Test squad for their two-match series against Sri Lanka.
And the 20-year-old all-rounder will be hoping to make his debut in the first encounter at Kingsmead on Wednesday.
The Lions prodigy has been identified for his strength at batting and will offer skipper Faf du Plessis some balance.
Mulder hit some form in his last 4-Day Series match, racking up 146 against the Knights to help the Lions lift the title.
In the bowling department, Lungi Ngidi has not been called up despite returning from a knee injury and the speedster will work his way back, playing 1Day Cup games for the Titans.
CSA National Selection Panel (NSP) convener Linda Zondi says: “Wiaan has been part of our strategic thinking in developing a batting allrounder for the Test squad for some time.
“His injury in the white ball series against Zimbabwe last year came at an unfortunate time and we are gradually
working him back into the Proteas set-up.
“We never want to rush players back from injury because that can be counter-productive, but he has now had a couple of good weeks of action in the 4-Day Domestic Series.
“For the same reason we are not going to rush Lungi Ngidi back into international action until he has had the time to gain full match fitness.
“After the convincing victory against Pakistan, the selectors are looking to exercise
consistency in the squad.
Meanwhile, South Africa lost the final T20 to Pakistan by 27 runs in Centurion on Wednesday night, as the series ended 2-1.
