Now that the dust has settled, we definitely need to look back at the transfer deadline day action.
There was so much last-minute drama at the PSL offices in Parktown and there are a few deals that didn’t go through but were so close to happening.
Naturally a lot of the drama involved Mamelodi Sundowns, who snapped up Rivaldo Coetzee from Ajax Cape Town and I think it’s a good move for him.
Considering all the problems Downs had at centreback last season, with Wayne Arendse injured and Bangaly Soumahoro making a couple of costly mistakes and other injuries meant sometimes they only had one fit player in that position.
So Rivaldo should get plenty of game time both here and on the continent.
It’s also a great steal for Downs since he was on his way to Scotland and they managed to benefit from that deal falling through.
Even though he is only 20, Rivaldo has international experience and so it’s a win win for both.
As part of the deal, Mario Booysen returns to Ajax Cape Town - the club where it all began for him.
Booysen had been on loan at SuperSport. But Downs apparently wanted too much money for him, so he has come home to Cape Town instead.
It’s actually a good move because Booysen, who captained Bafana Bafana at the Cosafa Cup, brings a wealth of experience and should give that Urban Warriors backline the leadership it needs.
At Cape Town City, Lebogang Manyama got his overseas move. And, again, I think it’s a win-win.
The skipper wanted to leave and I believe if a player doesn’t want to be there anymore, let him go or it can be disruptive.
I’m also glad he went overseas and not to a local club because, well, I always say our players need to go abroad to lift the quality of our game.
Maybe Turkey will be a gateway to bigger European leagues for him, especially since his club Konyaspor plays in the Europa League.
Another deadline day surprise was Sifiso Myeni going on loan to SuperSport United, just one year after joining Wits.
But the real juice is in those deals that didn’t happen.
Aubrey Ngoma was so nearly on his way to Chloorkop when John Comitis changed his mind and decided not to sell.
Jeremy Brockie was also going to the Brazilians if he had his way but SuperSport blocked him.
Then Phakamani Mahlambi, after failing to secure an overseas move, was so close to being sold locally but Wits couldn’t sort out a last minute deal.
