Springbok fullback Warrick Gelant will miss the start of this year’s Rugby Championship.
This after Gelant suffered a shoulder injury and will reportedly be sidelined for two months.
With the Bulls, Stormers and Sharks players currently in a Bok camp in Stellenbosch, Gelant’s Facebook fan page reads: “Turn a setback into a come back.
“I will undergo surgery soon on my shoulder.
“Will be out of action for a few months.”
With Willie le Roux the first-choice fullback in the Bok setup, Gelant, who made his debut for the national team against Italy last year, was expected to battle the Wasps fullback for his jumper.
But with Gelant now unavailable, it will be interesting to see if coach Rassie Erasmus calls up Sharks utility back Curwin Bosch.
The 21-year-old was a surprise omission from the camp when Erasmus added the Sharks players last week.
Another option would be for the Bok boss to recall Lions stalwart Andries Coetzee, who was first-choice in this position under the mentorship of Allister Coetzee.
The Boks also have to make-do without Sbu Nkosi, who has been ruled out for up to three months after suffering an ankle injury while on Super Rugby duty with the Sharks.
The Rugby Championship kicks off on August 18.
