Yoh, the Proteas really know how to shoot themselves in the foot.
My colleagues and I have often talked about how slow this setup is when it’s time to make changes to the team.
Often, players become fixtures in the squad and get into the team on reputation and habit rather than form.
Consistency in selection at its best is great for growing confidence and understanding, while at its worst the team becomes stale and impotent.
But what really gets to me is when there is no plan for succession.
Just look at what the retirement of AB de Villiers and the absence of JP Duminy has done to our batting middle order.
Players coming into those positions are still finding their feet and it’s a huge concern heading into the World Cup in a couple of months.
And Proteas bosses are at it again with Quinton de Kock unable to take the gloves due to injury.
David Miller is deputising, but what about a real wicketkeeper/ batsman getting a chance.
At the moment, two of the hottest prospects in SA cricket - Sinethemba Qeshile and Kyle Verryenne - are shining in that role.
It’s great to see 20-year-old Qeshile in the current T20 squad and hopefully, fans get to see what a talent he is should he make his debut.
Maybe the duo are still green for the World Cup, but I still think they will be a better bet behind the stumps than makeshift Miller if something happens to De Kock in the tournament.
