Newlands brought down the curtain on a super Super League season on Heritage Day.
And it delivered the shock of the season in the Super League A final between Durbell and defending champions Maties.
It was expected that the students from Stellenbosch would blow away their opposition again, much like they did to every team they faced this year to end the round-robin stage in first place and without defeat.
Durbell, on the other hand, went about their business quietly, only losing three league fixtures to finish in third place overall.
And after beating an under-strengthened Ikeys team in the semifinal at City Park last week, they had their work cut out in the decider.
Coach Johann Kotze’s men then stunned the hele Kaapstad, beating Maties - one of the teams they lost to during the group stage - 22-13 to be crowned Super League A champions for 2019.
Durbell weren’t the only winners on the day, with Kuilsrivier returning to the top flight after taking the honours in Super League B.
Coach Gerhard Matroos and his team had to pull out all the stops in the final to beat Hamlets 17-13 in a worthy SLB final.
Both teams will play in SLA next year and with the champions crowned, it is now time for the promotion/relegation playoffs.
Bellville had to work hard to book their spot in this encounter, beating St Georges 36-35.

They will now face Parow NTK at City Park on Saturday at 4pm for the right to play in the top flight.
While NTK will be well rested for the encounter, the guys from Bellville will play their third match in a week.
Having lost to Kuilsrivier (36-27) in the league semifinal, they then played St Georges on the weekend.
They will undoubtedly enter the match against Parow with sore bodies and will have their strength and conditioning tested to its limits.
Langa, meanwhile, were crowned champions of Super League C and will be joined by finalists Scottsdene Central in this league next season.
Langa were set to play Hands & Heart in the semifinal at City Park last week, but the match was abandoned after the Referee Society decided not to send a ref to the match.
Langa were then automatically through to the final.
As for Hands & Heart, they still have a shot at promotion after beating Strand 34-16 in the promotion/relegation qualifier at Newlands on Heritage Day.
Next up for them is a match against Young Peoples on Saturday to determine who will play in SLB next year.
