A draw against the All Blacks in Wellington was exactly what the Springboks needed.
If they had won the match, there would have been some sort of false confidence about our men in the Green and Gold.
Now we all know there is no room for false confidence in sport.
During the first half of the match, I was actually worried that the Springboks might win the match and think they have arrived.
To be honest, New Zealand didn’t pitch up in that first half and if they continued in that vein, the Boks would have won.
Fortunately the Kiwis pulled themselves together in the second half to give the Boks a real test.
Now say South Africa won this match, I believe it would have given the room for complacency in the World Cup opener against the New Zealanders .
Those of you that have played sports at any level will know that if you beat your opponent the last time, there is a small part of you that become complacent when squaring off against him again.
I know this is professional sport and the guys get the proper mental preparation to avoid this sort of thing, maar mens bly maar mens jong.
What’s more is that I believe both these teams should be wary of the threat from up north.
