Coaches were in the spotlight this past week.
Safa were battling to appoint a new Bafana Bafana coach while the coach of Polokwane City resigned and then popped up at Bloemfontein Celtic 24 hours later.
First the case of Luc Eymael.
On Thursday, pretty much out of the blue, the Belgian announced on 083Sport with Marawa that he had quit Polokwane City.
It came as a big surprise because just the night before, he had ended a run of seven without a win for Rise and Shine when they beat African All Stars in the Nedbank Cup.
It was a convincing win too, 3-1 the final score, as they secured their spot in the last 16.
But rather than be the catalyst to reignite their campaign, that was the final straw for Eymael.
A source has told me the club chairman came into the dressing room after they lost to Platinum Stars last weekend and had a go at all the players.
There were some threats over payment in December as well which the coach didn’t like.
So although he said he resigned for private reasons it’s more like he didn’t like what was happening at the very top.
What’s very suspect though is that he quit on Thursday and Friday was announced as the Bloem Celtic coach.
Either Celtic are VERY speedy with negotiations or he had been talking to them for some time already.
Safa could have taken a lesson or two in negotiation from Celtic because they seem to be sukkeling to tie down a coach.
The original wishlist is now seemingly ripped up with Carlos Queiroz tied up with Iran, and Safa are unable to avoid a big payout to have him released.
Herve Renard apparently had a bigger wishlist than a pop diva so it looks like he’s off the list too.
At least he would have been a new choice because now it looks like we are back to a former coach with Stuart Baxter reportedly the favourite.
Linked Ruud Krol is apparently away on holiday but I think it’s more important for Safa to get the right man for the job than worry about naming a coach before the friendlies at the end of the month.
If they must wait, they must wait.
