The EFF is calling for the suspension of the principal and two teachers who attended a private matric function allegedly organised only for white pupils of Brackenfell High School.
On Friday morning, party members held a picket outside the school, where they were confronted by private security, parents and law enforcement agencies.
Tensions ran high and police were on high alert as parents and party members nearly moered mekaar.
A vehicle belonging to the EFF had its window smashed, thought to have been caused by a ball bearing which was found inside the bakkie.
The EFF warned that it will return to the school today to hold another protest.
The party’s student command provincial convener Khotso Lefeela insists the principal is implicated in the staging of the event.
“How can the principal distance himself from an event that was held under the banner of his school, an event he had knowledge of?” he said.
“Even if the event was private and planned by this bourgeoisie, the school would have had to give the go-ahead.
“What we are saying is that we do not accept this denial by the school or the education department.”
Malibongwe Badi, of the EFF’s education portfolio, said: “We are calling for the suspension of the school principal and the teachers involved because they are promoting racism and dividing learners.
“The EFF is against racism, they should have known better.”
The Western Cape Education Department said last week the allegations of racism that surfaced on social media were false, and the school did not hold a matric ball due to lockdown regulations.
But the WCED was aware that a private event attended by two teachers – which was not organised by the school – was held.
Meanwhile, former pupils have opened an Instagram account in which they detail incidences of alleged discrimination they experienced at the school.
Former learner Siya Ntuzwana, who was a star pupil, rugby and cricket player, believes the school is to blame.
Taking to Facebook, he posted: “The school did not host the event but the parents got the school videographer to take videos and the same school videographer posted the video on the school social media page with the heading ‘Brackenfell High School Matric Dance’.
“Surely this guy could not have done double mistakes.”
Siya also claimed that the school’s head girl, who is white, did not attend the event after realising there were no black pupils.
The Daily Voice has come into possession of what is believed to be a guest list, which includes 73 students and four teachers’ names.
Replying to questions sent to the department, spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said: “The WCED was informed that two educators attended the event. We do not keep track of what educators do in their private capacity on a weekend and have not seen the said attendance list.
“The WCED is engaging with the school to determine a way forward.
“No allegations of discrimination have been made against this school previously, but we are certainly addressing those that have been raised now.”
