If there is a group of people who get a very unnecessarily bad rap, it has to be traffic cops. The interesting thing here is that this usually comes from the small stuff, after all it is irritating to get a parking ticket or get fined because your third party is out of date.
But when it comes to the big stuff, like the way cops try to make sure we behave properly on the road because they know (and so should we) that it is our lives they are saving, then surely we must support this effort. Perhaps it is time we acknowledged that.
Think of alcohol and roads. Nobody can disagree that they do not go together. The risk of death and manslaughter is so much greater driving under the influence of alcohol. That’s why Random Breath Testing, a real threat to those who drive drunk, is a good thing.
It may curtail the way you drive, but in general, the rules of the road are set out to preserve life. Surely we take enough risk on the roads as it is, and it’s plain dom to make it more dangerous. Perhaps we need a cultural rethink as to the value of traffic cops, whose job it is to maintain these safety rules, in our world?
