Besides the name reminding Bobby Nitro of a Transformer, the latest offering from Toyota, the Rav4 Prime, looks to be a range-topping beauty.
Debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show, this Rav4 performance model brings an estimated 225kW to an advanced all-wheel drive with sporty suspension and kwaai design features. In short, it looks fun to drive.
It is also the first Rav4 plug-in hybrid, able to make about 63km on battery alone. Doesn’t sound like a ot, but do bear in mind that it’s the highest range of any comparable hybrid on the market. More importantly, it can accelerate from zero to hero in 5.8 seconds, which is the second quickest in the Toyota lineup and comparable to other SUVs that have nowhere near the Prime’s fuel efficiency.
This all comes after the fifth-generation Rav 4 arrived in March and has made a serious mark on the market. The Prime, however, breaks new ground as being not only the most powerful Rav 4, but the most fuel efficient too. Toyota sees this vehicle as essential to an overall electrification strategy to be rolled out in years to come.
With more powerful motor-generators, a newly developed high-capacity lithium-Ion battery and a booster converter, the 2021 RAV4 Prime brings a 63kW jump in output over the RAV4 Hybrid and has the most power in its segment.
The SUV will be offered in two grades, SE and XSE. The SE brings a sporty attitude with 18-inch alloys, exclusive grille and front lower spoiler. Add to that rather comprehensive equipment and leather, and you have an SUV primed for stylish travel.
The XSE brings two-tone exterior paint, 19-inchers, headlight tech that helps you see round corners, paddle shifters and some premium cabin tech.
The Rav4 Prime has not been confirmed for the South African market, but the new generation Rav4 is, and is available in three grades starting at R436 200 for the 2.9 GX 2WD, with the VX 8AT AWD topping at R604 100.
All models carry a 6-services/ 90 000km service plan with 12-month/15 000km intervals.
A 3-year/100 000km warranty is also provided.
