Winter has been toying with us for a few weeks now. But over the past two weeks it’s really showed its teeth, with torrential rains and even snow making white caps at various places in the Western Cape.
Almal is cold and miserable and in my home there’s only one cure for that - lekker kos.
What we working moms need to ward off the winter chill is minimum effort with meals that are easy, simple, delicious and heartwarming.
I mean, who has lus to stand behind the stove for hours after sitting in traffic?
Not this sister, that’s for sure.
And with the price of virtually alles going up, now is the time to go back to your mom and ouma’s lang souse, bredies and soups.
Seasonal veggies are cheap, nutritious and good for the soul.
For me, the nicest part of it all is eating someone else’s efforts behind the stove, lol.
This week, we have a delicious selection of soups and breads from some of our favourite moms on the Cape Flats.
Queen of the cooks, Shanaaz Parker, is well-known for her cooking demonstrations, and she has given us two simple bread recipes that even novices can’t mess up.
I’ve also added my own favourite vegetable soup recipe, handed down the generations, with many ingredients coming and going, depending on what you have in your pantry.
This is the kind of soup where anything goes, so you can add your own favourites like butternut, baby marrow, cabbage, spring onion and tomato.
Also, let us remember the homeless in these times, so please, mense, go out there and share your kos. And if you have a spare blanket to spare, sommer give that as well.
