I want you to imagine something for me.
Someone breaks into your house in the middle of the night and stabs you.
He runs away, but one of your neighbours catches him.
The other neighbours all come out and help to hold him down.
He first denies that he did it, and then admits it, but says it’s his right to take what he wants.
Then during the trial, his lawyer tells the court that he is not guilty because he is a known criminal and is therefore allowed to commit the crime against you.
He also argues that the witnesses should not be allowed to testify against his client, because it will just make matters worse.
That may all seem laughable, until the judge agrees with him and finds the criminal not guilty.
If you agree that a situation like that is ridiculous, then you have to find Donald Trump’s impeachment trial equally ridiculous.
America continues to make itself the laughing stock of the world’s democracies.
Just think about it for a moment; they had a trial without witnesses testifying.
Trump’s political party, the Republicans, admit that he did what he’s accused of doing, but say it’s not bad enough for him to be removed from office.
Keep in mind that this is the same party that impeached Bill Clinton for a sex act in the Oval Office; something that clouded his moral fidelity, not his political principles.
In fact, virtually all the arguments they made then, they are now arguing against.
It is truly the strangest political thing to happen in our lifetime.
And when you watch the commentary from his supporters, you understand that the whole thing is underlined by a very broad sense of basic stupidity; the same stupidity that I am convinced will get Trump re-elected in November.
From what I can tell, it is not so much that the Republicans are playing dirty, it is that the Democrats are not willing or capable of playing equally dirty.
Combine that with the fact that their support base is a bunch of complacent, apathetic liberals who will in all likelihood not go and vote, and you understand how easy it will be for Trump to win again.
Because if nothing else, Trump is like crop top exposing America’s ugly underbelly and has given it a platform of pride.
Previously the world thought America’s garden variety racists were a tiny minority, mostly too embarrassed to openly expose themselves.
And largely too intellectually challenged to argue their beliefs in the open.
But now that they have a champion in the White House, a man who is a reflection of their own mediocrity and ambivalence, with the Republican machine behind him, they are going to make sure they vote to keep him in power for as long as possible.
