Today is the first big election-day in America since Donald Trump became president.
You may have heard it referred to as the “mid-terms”.
It’s called that because it is held midway through an American president’s four-year term in office.
The elections are for all the different American tiers of political power, including municipalities, but most importantly the houses where laws are made - the Senate, the Congress and the House of Representatives.
Trump’s party, the Republicans, are in charge of all of them at the moment, which is why he’s able to get away with so much double-talk, threats and blatant lies.
But now with Barrack Obama and Oprah Winfrey having campaigned for people to vote for the opposition - the Democrats - there’s hope that things may change.
The problem is, very few Americans normally vote in the mid-terms, because they don’t see it as important.
Despite that, traditionally the midterms usually see the American president’s party losing a lot of leadership ground.
And that’s because these elections are also seen as a referendum on what the public thinks of the job the president has been doing since he came to power.
And if nothing else, Trump’s rhetoric has resulted in so many hate-fuelled mass shootings in America lately that it’s useless to even try and count them.
So these are crucial elections, which is why Trump has spent almost all his time addressing rallies and pandering to his support base.
It is a known fact that Trump didn’t win America’s popular vote in 2016, but he won the presidency because of how the country’s voting system is set up.
While we usually ignore the American mid-terms, today is an opportunity for ordinary Americans to show the world how they really feel about Trump, firstly by showing up at the polls and secondly by how they chose to vote.
They are either going to give Trump’s ego a massive boost or they are going to cut him down to size and restore some of the faith we once had in the U.S. as a beacon of moral hope.
I hope Americans finally take a stand and make their voices heard so that by this time next week, Trump is a loud barking dog, with no bite left.
