If there there is one attitude coming from motorists that ought to be addressed, it is our attitude toward children and the road.
They are our most vulnerable road users, and often in our townships, they are forced to play on the road as there is nowhere else to play.
So the attitude that “they shouldn’t be there” needs to be looked at. In an ideal world we would have lovely grassy parks for all children, but this world is not ideal!
Therefore, because kids are not responsible in many aspects of life, we need to make an adjustment when it comes to public roads.
The main responsibility lies with the car driver to take extra care as they are in charge of vehicles that could kill or injure.
Some motorists claim parents should take responsibility for their kids in the streets. But this gets in the way of ensuring safety.
The death of a child affects an entire community.
