Community radio station Radio 786 is going the extra mile to help pupils ward off the chill.
Monday over 200 learners at Protea Primary in Bonteheuwel received a winter kit, thanks to generous listeners.
Children, who attend the school, are mostly underprivileged, and the school was identified as one of Radio 786’s outreach projects for this year.

Earlier this year, they also donated six boxes of stationery, including teacher aids.
Radio 786 also paid for the reconnection of the school’s telephone lines, organised a motivational speaker to address learners to inspire them to dream big and arranged to feed the learners during the school’s June holiday programme.
Brand manager Rushni Allie said they would continue to assist the school.
“We are particularly proud of having painted two of the school’s eight classrooms, the remainder of which will be pain-
ted during the September school holidays,” Allie says.
The winter kit includes a black raincoat, beanie, school shoes and a grey school jersey. These have been sponsored by the listeners of Radio 786, Allie said.
Principal Mabel Valentine says: “We made a list of the very underprivileged and also realised most of our children have some or other needs. One child might have a jacket and not a jersey, so we divided all the packs and more kids were able to be helped.
“We are so grateful to Radio 786 for their assistance and to the listeners who have donated. “Our children are grateful and happy about the much-needed gifts received.”
There are still children at the school who need shoes and anyone who would like to donate can contact the secretary on
