Move over JRR Tolkien and George RR Martin.
Cape Town has its own fantasy writer to rival the Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones authors.
Sue-Ellen Bailey from Parow is set to release a series of five novels, following two years of continuous writing.
The 39-year-old published her first book, called The Journey of the Forgotten Kahul, in December 2020 and launched it in June 2021.
The sequel is set for release in March.
“The Journey of the Forgotten Kahul, my first book, has always been such an inspiration because of my parents encouraging me to always read, write and to be creative,” she says.
“This book is based on a magical journey, a question that so many people ask themselves: where do I come from?”
A synopsis of the book reads: “The fate of the universe hangs in the balance when two beings from different worlds fall in love. A child was conceived and hidden from the Creators who banished their love to the Outer Realm. Daina’s mysterious life slowly unravels when she is forced to face the darkness that follows her. The truth about her life is written in ancient books guarded by the Protectors of Athela.”
Sue says: “The Journey of the Forgotten Kahul is a fantasy novel, the book is filled with magic and adventure with twists.”
“I am very dedicated to my writing and as an author, I have not limited myself to one genre,” she says as plans to launch a children’s book at the end of this month.
“I’m excited and overwhelmed to introduce my first illustrated book, Salley and her Friends Finding Squirey the Squirrel, currently in book form and being reviewed and released in Afrikaans, English and Xhosa.”
She adds: “My journey as a self-published author from the Cape Flats has been a difficult struggle but I still pursued my ambition.
“I am responsible for my own marketing and that is difficult without any assistance.”
Sue-Ellen did workshops with Grade 7 pupils at Zeekoevlei Primary School last year.
"It was such an amazing workshop. I have donated books to the Grade 7 students and library, including T-shirts of ‘The Kahul’ for their achievements.
“Also in the same area of Grassy Park, I have donated to an NPO matric ball dresses, shoes included, for local youngsters to encourage them about their future and make their special day amazing.
“I do encourage our youngsters from the Cape Flats to read. ’The power of reading holds the key to success’ is my belief.”
The book retails for R190-R200 at various local bookstores.
