A corrupt cop from Malmesbury has lost nearly a million rand of his pension and he has been sentenced to six years behind bars after he withdrew several cases on behalf of victims while extorting others.
Sergeant Jeremy Slingers, stationed at Malmesbury Police Station, was sentenced on Monday at the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court to eight years imprisonment, two of which were suspended for five years, for corruption charges.
He was further slapped with three years direct imprisonment for six charges of fraud.
The sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will effectively serve six years behind bars.
The State proved that in November 2014, Slingers persuaded two people who were arrested for drunken driving to pay him R200 and R140 for their release.
He had at first requested brandy and Coke from the second person before accepting the money.
The fraud charges related to Slingers pretending to be the victims, and withdrawing more than five cases by fraudulently using his fingerprints and signatures on documents.
He was the investigating officer in all of the cases.
The police have deducted R900 000 from Slingers’ pension.
Slingers has a six-year-old child and has been in the police force for 11 years.
